Assessment:
Frequently called an “evaluation”, an assessment analyzes a person's communication or occupational therapy skills. At KSPS, we administer a comprehensive, individual, diagnostic battery. We obtain information from a variety of sources including case history, patient or family interview, observations, standardized tests, questionnaires, hearing screening, cognitive screening, and play-based assessments. Following the evaluation, we provide a written report detailing the results, diagnosis and treatment plan.
Diagnosis:
A person needing speech-language therapy could be diagnosed with a disorder, delay, or difference. A speech language disorder is a condition that inhibits normal communication as compared to peers of the same age, gender, and culture. A speech or language delay is the development of speech in a normal pattern at a slower rate. A speech difference is normal production of speech that differs from others due to the influence of another language, region or culture. At KSPS, we offer services for all three diagnoses.
For patients receiving occupational therapy, the diagnosis is made by a physician. The occupational therapist gathers information during the assessment to determine the nature and severity of the diagnosis, the possible effectiveness of occupational therapy and an appropriate treatment plan.
Treatment Plan
A treatment plan, also known as a “therapy plan”, outlines the specific needs of the client and states the goals of therapy. At KSPS, we target areas that are most relevant and functional for each client. Progress reports detailing the client's improvement are provided regularly. Previous therapy plans and input from other professionals are always considered in designing the most appropriate program. Children receiving school services are able to attend summer therapy only, using the school IEP.
